Colt Cabana

Scott Colton was born May 6, 1980 in Deerfield, Illinois, a northern suburb of Chicago, and trained in the city under Ace Steel, Danny Dominion and Kevin Quinn. He debuted June 19, 1999, and finished a business marketing degree at Western Michigan University in 2002 while already working weekends. The degree turned out to be relevant. Few wrestlers of his generation understood the selling side of the business as well.

His early years ran through Steel Domain Wrestling in St. Paul and the Midwest halls that fed IWA Mid-South, where he later held the promotion's heavyweight title. The connection that mattered most from that period was personal: he and CM Punk came up together in the same Chicago rooms, and the two of them carried that history into Ring of Honor.

Ring of Honor ran its first shows in 2002 and Cabana was on the roster almost from the start. With Punk and Ace Steel he formed the Second City Saints, and with Punk as his partner he won the ROH World Tag Team Championship twice. His singles programs in the company put him opposite Homicide and Bryan Danielson, which is about as serious a pair of opponents as the 2000s indies could offer.

He could wrestle it straight or wrestle it funny. The trick was that the crowd trusted both versions.

What set him apart in a locker room full of technicians was range. Cabana could work a stiff, grounded match one night and a comedy match the next without either one feeling like a lesser product. On MTV's short-lived Wrestling Society X in 2006 he played Matt Classic, a 1950s throwback who won with the abdominal stretch, and the character was good enough that Chikara later booked it into three King of Trios tournaments.

After a handful of preliminary matches under other names, WWE signed him and sent him to Ohio Valley Wrestling in May 2007. He won the OVW Television Championship that October and the OVW Southern Tag Team titles twice. The main-roster debut came on SmackDown on August 15, 2008 as Scotty Goldman, opposite The Brian Kendrick. The run never went anywhere and the company released him on February 20, 2009.

On the record, that is the whole WWE story: about twenty months, one televised name, no major push. Off the record it became something else, because of what Cabana did next with a laptop and a friend.

Cabana launched The Art of Wrestling in 2010, a long-form interview podcast recorded mostly in hotel rooms with whoever else was on the card. There was almost nothing like it at the time. Wrestlers talked to each other, not to a host, and the result was the first sustained public record of what independent wrestling actually felt like from the inside. The show passed 400 episodes and is still the reference point for every wrestling podcast that followed it.

Its most consequential episode came in November 2014, when CM Punk sat down and explained why he had walked out of WWE, including his account of his medical treatment there. WWE's ringside physician, Dr. Christopher Amann, sued both men for defamation in 2015, seeking roughly four million dollars. A Chicago jury found for Punk and Cabana in 2018. A separate dispute between the two friends over legal fees followed; both suits were dismissed in September 2019 with no money changing hands, according to PWInsider. The friendship, by their own later public statements, did not survive intact.

The 2010s were his best years as a draw. He beat Adam Pearce for the NWA World Heavyweight Championship on March 6, 2011 and again on April 8, 2012, in a series that gave the old belt its most-watched matches in years. He worked Pro Wrestling Guerrilla, Juggalo Championship Wrestling as Officer Colt Cabana, the UK circuit including Revolution Pro, and Pro Wrestling Noah in Japan, where the promotion's own awards recognised his Global Tag League work three times. Pro Wrestling Illustrated placed him 44th in its 2012 top 500.

He returned to Ring of Honor on April 1, 2016 at Supercard of Honor X and moved to the commentary desk with Ian Riccaboni from the start of 2017, while still wrestling. The same pairing later voiced the RetroMania Wrestling video game. In February 2019 he worked New Japan's Honor Rising shows and reached the quarter-finals of the New Japan Cup, where Sanada put him out.

All Elite Wrestling signed him in February 2020 and he appeared at the Revolution pay-per-view on February 29. Brodie Lee brought him into the Dark Order that spring; after Lee's death in December 2020 the group turned sympathetic and Cabana stayed with it until his last match under the banner in August 2022. He challenged Chris Jericho for the ROH World Championship on November 2, 2022 and lost. From mid-2023 the public record shows him mostly behind the curtain as a coach and producer for AEW and Ring of Honor, with occasional tag matches alongside Brandon Cutler.

His signature offence stayed the same throughout: the Colt .45 and the Billy Goat's Curse, plus a comic timing that no move name captures. The historical point is simpler. For a stretch of about fifteen years, if an independent promotion anywhere in the English-speaking world needed a name that would sell tickets and then talk about the show afterward, Colt Cabana was the call.
